Revealing Unheard Voices

Women’s Thoughts, Agency and Movements Inspired by scriptures

This antology of narratives by religious activists promoting the unification of feminism and religion, is a product of collaboration between the Netherlands-Indonesia Consortium for Muslim-Christian Relations (NICMCR) Gender Working Group with the Gender Studies Study Program and Gender Research Center of the University of Indonesia (PRG SKSG-UI).

In the quiet voices found in the movements of Islamic and Christian activists in these texts, we hear that new ideas that reconstruct religious concepts have become a source of knowledge that reorients the religious course towards a concept that humanises women and vulnerable groups. Secondly, these voices demonstrate that feminist practices and religious values can go hand in hand. Finally, the stories show that much strength and support from different parties, of which ‘sisterhood’ is undoubtedly the basic force, has led to hopeful change.

Bunga rampai narasi para aktivis agama yang mempromosikan penyatuan antara feminisme dan agama ini, merupakan produk kolaborasi antara Kelompok Kerja Gender Netherlands-Indonesia Consortium for Muslim-Christian Relations (NICMCR) dengan Program Studi Studi Gender dan Pusat Penelitian Gender Universitas Indonesia (PRG SKSG-UI).

Dalam suara-suara senyap gerakan aktivis Islam dan Kristen yang ditemukan dalam teks bunga rampai ini, kita mendengar bahwa ide dan gagasan baru yang merekonstruksi pemahaman agama telah menjadi sumber pengetahuan yang dapat mendekonstruksi arah keagamaan untuk lebih memanusiakan perempuan dan kelompok rentan. Kedua, suara-suara ini menunjukkan bahwa praktik feminisme dan nilai-nilai ajaran agama dapat berjalan beriringan. Terakhir, narasi-narasi tersebut menunjukkan bahwa banyak kekuatan dan dukungan dari berbagai pihak, yang tidak terbantahkan lagi bahwa sisterhood adalah kekuatan dasar, telah membawa perubahan bergelimang asa.
